Appetite Suppressants

Appetite suppressants are a type of diet pill that are very common in the weight loss marketplace. The reason is that they can effectively assist dieters in being able to stick to a reduced calorie diet because they won’t feel as hungry as they usually would, even if they have eaten far less food at each of their meals.

The key to appetite suppressants is that they don’t actually cause you to lose weight, but they will help you to do it on your own. This is an important feature because it means that you will be able to use the time that you are taking these pills to develop healthy lifestyle habits that will not only reduce your weight, but they will also help you to keep it off once you have reached your goal and you are no longer using the product.

There are two major types of over the counter appetite suppressants. The first is stimulants. These mimic the effect of prescription drugs by affecting the central nervous system and causing the blood pressure and heart rate to rise as they would in the “fight or flight” response. In many dieters, this causes the appetite to shrink. This means that if you’re following a healthy and low calorie diet, you will be able to eat the smaller meals that are required to lose weight, but without feeling hungry when you’re done eating.

The second type of nonprescription appetite suppressants are those that work to fill the stomach before a meal so that you will need to consume less food in order to feel satisfied. These use different substances, from certain types of indigestible gels, to certain types of fibers. They are swallowed with a large amount of water, which they then absorb so that they will expand and take up more space within the stomach. In some dieters, this makes them feel as though they have eaten more, even when they have consumed a smaller amount of food.

A couple of the more common ingredients that are marketed as being effective appetite suppressants are hoodia and glucomannan. It is important to speak with your doctor before you use products containing either of these ingredients. The first has received a great deal of media hype but has yet to be proven effective in any reputable scientific studies. The second – a dietary fiber – can be effective in some dieters when used in the right quantities, so in this case it is most important to check the amount of the substance that is used in the formulation.
