Ethylapovincaminoate is a synthetic chemical. It is made to me structurally similar to a substance naturally found in the periwinkle plant and that is used for medicinal purposes.

What is Ethylapovincaminoate?

Ethylapovincaminoate is also known as Ethyl Apovincaminate, Ethyl Ester, TCV-3b, RGH-4405, Eburnamenine-14-carboxylic acid, cavinton, AY-27255, vinpocetine, and by other names.

This substance is sold as a prescription drug called Cavinton in Germany. That said, while it is widely used for medicinal purposes, high quality studies evaluating the health benefits and safety of this substance are lacking, according to WebMD. In the United States, it’s legal to use this substance in supplements, but there is controversy surrounding its use.

Controversy About This Diet Pill Ingredient

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first acknowledged Ethylapovincaminoate as a new dietary ingredient in the 1990s. The FDA permitted its use in supplements at that time.  However, in 2016, the FDA came to a tentative conclusion that the ingredient may not meet the qualifications for permission for use as a dietary supplement after all.

At that time, it sought the input of industry trade associations before it would make its final determination regarding whether or not to allow Ethylapovincaminoate in dietary supplements.  In June 2019, the government agency decided to issue a statement warning pregnant women and women who could become pregnant that this ingredient is not safe to take.

Warnings About Ethylapovincaminoate

As a result of the warning and the concerns over the safety of using Ethylapovincaminoate, the FDA has directed to companies marketing products containing this ingredient to include a warning on their labels.  The warning must caution pregnant women and women who could become pregnant that the product contains an ingredient that they should avoid. The FDA also indicated its intention to produce a final ruling on whether or not the ingredient should be considered appropriate for inclusion in dietary supplements.

Why Do People Use This Ingredient?

Ethylapovincaminoate is used for everything from energy boosting to improving memory to weight loss, as well as many other reasons.  However, by the writing of this review, there has yet to be any solid evidence that would support the use of supplements containing this ingredient in order to achieve any of those treatment goals.

The way this diet pill ingredient works in the body has yet to be determined. It may raise blood flow to the brain and provide certain neurons in the brain with protection against injury.
